Born in Dudley, Staffordshire in 1858, the twenty-first year of the reign of King Victoria.

Mary Ruston married Benedict Vaughan in Kensington in 1884. She was born in Dudley, Staffordshire, famous for its chain-making, and it is believed her family were chain-makers. In the 1911 census aged 53 she had just been widowed and gave her occupation as charwoman (a woman employed to do housework) rather than housewife.
