The Fleece

Len was the landlord of The Fleece Public House at 18 High Street Cinderford in the Forest of Dene in Gloucestershire, For centuries it was a hotel and a resting place for pilgrims visiting the tomb of Edward II of England. Barry Risbridger was sent to stay with Len and Annie for a while during WW2 as his home in Bletchingley was relatively dangerous, being in the path of German bombers and doodlebugs attacking London. The hotel was derelict when it was destroyed by fire in 2018.

Len was a chauffeur until 1916 when he went into the army, where he was a driver for a Major driving around the airfields in France. After the War was a taxi driver until 1928, when he went into training greyhounds with his uncle in Norfolk. They lived in Norfolk for two years, then moved around the greyhound tracks in Birmingham and Gloucester.

In 1938 Len and Annie took over the running of the Fleece Hotel in Cinderford, Gloucestershire. The photo shows the undercroft, known as The Monks' Retreat, which dated back to 1500.
